India and Shri Lanka is not connected now by any roads. However, according to legend Ramayana, Rameshwaram is Island from which Lord Rama built a bridge from India to Shri Lanka to save his captured by demon Ravana wife Sita.
After he built the bridge with a help of monkey king Hanuman and other animals, after he win in the fight demon Ravana - King of Shri Lanka, after he got back his wife Sita from Shri Lanka to India, he prayed here to Shiva to absolve any sins that he might have committed during his war against the demon king Ravana.
To worship Shiva, Rama wanted to have the largest lingam. He directed Hanuman, the monkey lietunant in his army to bring the lingam from Himalayas. Since it took longer to bring the lingam, Sita built a small lingam, which is believed to be the lingam in this temple.
Also it is believed that Patanjali - mainly known as the author of Yogas Sutras - is in the meditative state called somadhi under this temple. Patanjali is also author of the song played on the vedatrac.com website. But this 12th century temple has longest doorways of all Temples in India.
We did our prayers here and wished happiness to everybody from this historically important place - the important part of the way why Vishnu came to Earth as Rama.
And while we did our prayers and where standing in a line of about thousand people to make archana at the Sitas built Shiva Lingam - I had to save also my wife as she just passed out because of lack of oxygen in the temple. So afterwords we also took a bath in holly tanks of temple.
Wishing you Love and Happiness,
Hare Ram, Sita Ram
